ISTS Footy Pools for 2024 - Round 10
This has been Sir Doug Nicholls Round with a celebration of indigenous contribution to the AFL. Many teams changed their names to local indigenous words. The man himself was the first indigenous Australian to be knighted and served as the first indigenous Governor of South Australia. He played 54 games for Fitzroy from 1932 to 1937 and was the first indigenous player to be selected for the Victorian State team after which he was selected for 4 State matches. So a good choice for naming this round. Port were renamed Yartapuulti, The Crows were renamed the Kaurna word for Crow - Kuwarna, the Eagles were called Waalitj Marawar, the Docker were Walyalup, Melbourne were Narrm and St Kilda were Euro-Yroke.
It was another entertaining round with some close ones and some unexpected results. Top of the list was the Eagles knocking of the Demons in the West (or should that be Waalitj Marawar toppling the Naarm) which was only guessed by 3% of us. Next was Bullies accounting for the Giants at the Western Sydney Showgrounds which was only predicted by 7%. You might have though less likely but 18% of us picked the Suns to beat the Catters up north but those who saw the outs from Geelong probably factored that into their tip.
In terms of blowouts this round, we had the Lions belting the Tigers by 119 points at the Gabba (Yuggera-Turrbal), the Suns over the Catters by 64 points and Sydney over Carlton by 52.
So how did all of this affect our tipping? Were there enough upsets to stop anyone getting 9 right? Let's all look together!!
ISTS AFL Pools 2024 - Round 10 Results for Tipsters
This week, you needed to get 7 correct for the round. There were 13 winners this week each earning $5.55.
Congratulations to Kathy Lange, Karen Hickman, Catherine Nairn, David Shaw, Denice Daou, Ed Jacobs, Bernie McGrath, Ian Mills, Vicki Allen, Jenny Butler, Robert Smith, Ryan Bailey and Juris Wulfius.
This week's ladder is still a bit fluid lower down. All own their own at the top of the ladder, we still have Len Colgan on 64 points. But 2 points back, there is the group of Bruce Thomas, Patricia Coulthard and Alan Brideson on 62 points. Staying in touch are Jossalyn Murphy, David Shaw and Lisa Morgan on 61 points. Welcoming to country are Brett Heritage, Gary Wood, Brian Quick, Darren Garbin and Justin King on 60 points. Smoking in ceremony are Christopher Blake, Michael Sands, Ian Mills and Scott Ainsworth on 59 points. Dancing a bit futher back we have Andrew Crook, Adam Mather and Tristan Bibbo on 58 points. Then a tribe follows with Neville Rankine, Tracey Goode, Vicki Allen, Catherine Nairn, Paul Sherlock, Ian Duncan, Grant Williams, Marek Pokorny, HeatherMander, Michael Nettle, Chris Cox, Malcolm Parsons, Sandy Ellis, Justin Faggotter, Brian Simpson, Randall Kiesewetter, Dominic Marafioti and Kristy Johns on 57 points.
This week's big movers and shakers begins with Robert Smith up 22, Catherine Nairn, Vicki Allen and Jenny Butler up 21, Ed Jacobs, Juris Wulfius and Karen Hickman up 18, Bernie McGrath and Denice Daou up 16, Kathy Lange up 9, David Shaw and Tracey Goode up 7, Grant Williams, Ian Duncan, Paul Sherlock, Gary Lyons, Adam Mather and Neville Rankine up 6, Craig Jones and Ian Mills up 5.
The current 32nd last place holder is Ed Jacobs who rose 18 places. Last week it was Helen Douglass who fell 8 spots.
This week there were 24 distinct tips which is 16 fewer than last week showing that perhaps we are getting better at this.
The average total score is 54.7 and the average score this round was 5.5 up 1.2 from last week indicating that we are getting better at this but only 1 better on average than coin tossing.
The Power are up to 4th on the ladder with 7 wins from 10 and a get out of jail win over the plucky Hawks who could not believe it! The 9 day break must have helped but it really was a Houdini trick. The Power travel to Hobart on Saturday to take on North in the early afternoon match. I can feel a percentage booster coming on
The Crows are now 13th on the ladder with 3 wins and a draw from 10. The Crows didn't have the Power's Houdini magic to stop the Pies wrestling back the lead in the dying minutes. But the Crows come-back was entertaining. Adelaide will host the improved Eagles at Adelaide Oval on Sunday in the last match of the round.
Round 11 also starts on Thursday night with the Dockers taking on the Pies in Perth. Given their close encounter with Adelaide at Collingwood's home dung hill, the Maggies might be vulnerable over there! Math starts at 7:40pm
I will be in Darwin for the Lions Clubs National conference next weekend so the commentary might be quite abbreviated.
